Get To Know The Flathead Valley

I moved to Columbia Falls, Montana in 2020 and I am thankful to call this beautiful state “home”. There’s truly no where else like it. I may be a bit biased (ok, maybe a lot biased), but the Flathead Valley is in a league of it’s own. With breathtaking beauty in every direction, endless outdoor recreation, and something to suit every taste and budget, it’s easy to fall in love with this magnificent area.

The Flathead Valley consists of the following cities: Whitefish, Kalispell, Columbia Falls, Bigfork, Eureka, Polson, and West Glacier. Whether you’re thinking of moving here, or you just want to stop in for a visit, you will surely be in for a treat.

Things to Do

Glacier National Park is at the top of most people’s “must-see” lists - and for good reason! Located less than an hour away from Kalispell and Whitefish, Glacier National Park is one of the most stunning landscapes in the US. Known as the “Crown of The Continent”, Glacier National Park offers endless hiking opportunities, kayaking, white water rafting, and much more! If you are limited on time, check out Apgar Village (located just inside of the West Entrance), grab a huckleberry ice cream cone, kayak on Lake McDonald, and take a short walk through the Trail of the Cedars. If you have more time to enjoy, I highly recommend driving the Going To The Sun Road, hike at Logan’s Pass, and visit East Glacier.

Flathead Lake is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. It encompasses over 200 square miles of water and over 185 miles of shoreline. With crystal clear water, colorful rocks, and picturesque views, it’s easy to see why Flathead Lake is a destination in itself. Rent a boat, jet ski, kayak, or paddle board to enjoy a day out on the water. If you’re looking for a unique adventure, check out Wildhorse Island - located within Flathead Lake! This island is home to several wild horses, bighorn sheep, and even black bear. Enjoy a hike or picnic, and simply take in the views.

Whitefish Lake may be a bit smaller than Flathead Lake, but it doesn’t disappoint when it comes to summer recreation! Go kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, and fishing - or simply relax on the shore at Whitefish City Beach.

Shop and dine in our locally owned establishments. Whitefish, Kalispell, and Bigfork each have their own distinct Main Streets with abundant shopping and restaurants. From coffee shops, to casual dining, to formal cuisine, there’s something for every pallet. If you’re searching for nightlife, local bands, breweries, and wineries; we have those too!

Eat Flathead Cherries in the summer months! If you’re lucky enough to be here when the cherries are ripe, you’ll surely enjoy taking a drive around Flathead Lake and sampling the cherries from the local fruit stands. These locally grown cherries are sweet, fresh, and famous for a reason!

Enjoy the Farmers Markets in each city! Whitefish, Kalispell, and Columbia Falls each host their own Farmers Market in the summer months. From May through September, you can enjoy locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as locally created arts and crafts. Many markets even feature a variety of food trucks and live music!
